In the last 6 months we all have witnessed, how advanced Artificial intelligence systems have astonished us with Intelligence and hyper-scaled reach.(Human-level intelligence ? ) Tools like ChatGPT, Dall-E, Auto GPT, and many more, have highlighted concerns regarding, breach of ethics, human labor loss, inequality, discrimination, etc. Along with these concerns, the use of energy resources to train and maintain these big models, and data centers can't never be ignored. Last week I came across a research paper that measures the amount of electricity and water required to cool down the infrastructure of these Tools.
For the past few weeks, whenever I open Chat GPT to ask or assign a task, I ask myself, If I could have done the same by using lower energy resources, maybe the old fashion way of googling or taking a few searches on youtube, or maybe asking a friend/socially?
As a Designer, Architect and an earthling, makes me conscious about my intentions of Using these high energy consuming tools.Finally, I tried to fiction out (wouldn't call them designs ) some Ideas to make users of Chat GPT consciously aware of their queries.
Many times we take technology for granted to even assign the easiest and simplest task which could have been done by ourselves. Keeping that in mind, should Chat GPT have an energy-conscious feedback and guidance system? Should Microsoft, open AI, Sam Altman, think of Sustainable technology and sustainable software?
